To the Glory of God

1 Corinthians 10 vs 31

This verse challenges us to live out a Christian lifestyle in a pagan culture.

Doing everything to the glory of God covers not only spiritual or churchy activities but includes every aspect of our lives.  This especially affects our relationships with each other in families, in marriages, in our work and in our recreation.

We may not be in the situation cited by Paul, where we are presented with the possibility of eating meat sacrificed to idols, but idolatry still exists in more subtle forms in our contemporary culture.

Scripture presents us with principles that have their original context in ancient cultures but which in practice are equally applicable today.  In the biblical book of Leviticus, the Lord exhorts us to be holy because He, the Lord our God, is holy (Lev 19 v2).  In this verse, the word “holy” means “set apart”, and it applies as much today as when it was first written thousands of years ago.

But God does not leave us to attain holiness solely through our own efforts.  He has not abandoned us but He is actively working with us and in us as we walk with Him.  As God says, “I the LORD am holy—I who make you holy” (Lev 21 v8).
