The Temptation of Jesus

Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus went through His time of testing in the wilderness without sin.  This was a significant breakthrough because up to this point in history, all had failed and everyone had fallen short of the glory of God.

At the beginning of His temptation, Jesus was sent by the Spirit into the desert.  He experienced the same weaknesses and frailties as we do.  We can be hungry, we can be lonely, and we can evade being obedient to God’s will.

Jesus stands as our advocate before a holy God – satan is our accuser.  Without Jesus acting as our defence lawyer in the court of God’s righteousness, we do not have a leg to stand on.

Although it is impossible for us to be sinless, to bear fruit for God, we must constantly be prepared to tackle sin in our lives or else our Christian witness is counterfeit.

The experience of Jesus in the wilderness fulfils the experience of Israel as recorded in the Old Testament.
